The Amazing Anya Culling

Throughout the marathon season you probably heard the name Anya Culling frequently and her story over the last 4 years is absolutely phenomenal!

If you watched the marathon last Sunday, you might have seen her cross the finish line. She came in as 16th woman over the line in the Elites, with a blisteringly quick time of 2h 44m. But she wasn’t always this fast. In fact, before lockdown, her previous marathon time was a very everyday-runner time of 4h 34m. She took over 2 hours off her marathon time in just two years, showing that you don’t have to start fast to get fast.

Harry Morgan recently had an interview with her which was very insightful, speaking about her improvement every time she ran, her down to earth nature and why she even began running in the first place. Well worth the watch..

Marathon Completed & Lessons learnt.

Our last newsletter was pre marathon on 19th April, with lots of nervous anticipation for the big day.

Marathon day was amazing and anyone considering doing London should 100% go for it. It’s an unforgettable experience and a bucket list event I’m really proud to have completed.

The crowds from Greenwich, through to Charlton, Rotherhide, Tower Bridge, Canary Wharf and along Embankment were incredible. I spent the whole race giving thumbs up to well wishers shouting “Go on Wilko.”

I set myself a target of running 3.30 and felt on target until the last 3 painful miles, when my pace dropped slightly. However I managed to clock 3.33.03 and I’m really chuffed to have achieved that time in my first marathon.

Would I do it again?

100% yes but perhaps without setting myself the time challenge and certainly not any time soon!

Thanks to everyone who donated or sent words of support.

Lessons learnt.

  1. It’s great to stretch and challenge yourself. I went ALL IN on this, trained hard, made sacrifices, did my research, planned correctly and go the result I wanted.

  2. Physical activity is hugely important for (my) mental health.

  3. Having a personal goal is a great focus.

  4. There are no cutting corners when running marathons!

Competition Review - Year 3 & 4 Mixed Football

We hosted a fantastic girls and boys, year 3/4 football tournament on April 25th at Kennington Park. For the first time we held two events at the same venue, which worked brilliantly for increasing participation and allowing schools to bring more children to an event.

8 schools were in attendance, several bringing two teams to boost the numbers. The tournament format involved two leagues per event with semi finals and finals to determine the winners.

The standard of football was much improved from previous events, with the girls showing far greater confidence representing their schools.

After a competitive group stage, 4 fiercely fought semi finals took place with Woodmansterne progressing to play Julians in the girls event and Immanuel and St Andrew defeating Stockwell and going through to face the Julian’s boys team, who’d beaten Woodmansterne.

Two great finals were played with Julians triumphing in both to leave coaches Matt and Stan very happy.

Thanks to all who came to compete.

The victors, Julian’s primary school girls and boys teams winning 2-0 and 4-1 in their respective finals. Well done to them!

As we enter the final stretch of our competitions programme, we have 4 events left for the summer term:

Moving Matters Soccer School

Monday Night Football / Year 3 - Year 7 / 17:30 - 18:30 / £6 a session

As of today we have had a 59% increase in attendance at our Soccer School compared to last year, and with the introduction of MMFC and our Wildcats programme, momentum has picked up month on month.

With that being said, we’ve had a few parents enquire about sessions for those who are not eligible for our Developmental programme and cannot attend our Super Saturday sessions.

Earlier this week we relaunched our Monday sessions alongside our Wildcats programme. The aims of this session are:

  • Building a relationship with the ball through ball mastery practice

  • Working on core football skills such as passing, dribbling, and shooting.

  • Learning the game through small sided matches.

Players that perform well in these sessions will have the opportunity to be moved up to our Developmental sessions on Wednesdays.
