Girls in Sport:

How UK Schools Are Levelling the Playing Field

Over the past few years, there's been increasing attention on encouraging girls to participate in more sport, highlighting the obstacles they face as well as the huge advantages that sport can bring them. Despite steps toward gender equality, many barriers still stop girls from fully joining in sport - both within school and beyond the classroom.

At Moving Matters we put a big emphasis on creating equal opportunities for all. With our annual Girls Football competition and our new Weetabix Wildcats football programme, we are creating safe and nurturing environments for young girls to thrive.

Our recent competition in November saw over 200 girls take part in competitive football and our Soccer School sees around 25 girls attend every week.

Our goal is to inspire children during their informative primary years, so that when they start secondary education they have an enthusiasm for PE, sport and physical activity.

The drop off in activity rates with girls from 11-18 is of great concern and so providing positive experiences and finding a way to engage from 4-11 is vital.

WhichSchoolAdvisor have wrote a really insightful article about Girls in School Sport that we believe is worth a read below:

Coach of the Term

Aaron Carrera

Since joining Moving Matters in January, Aaron has settled in well to the team and the schools with whom he works.

This term Aaron made a positive contribution at Easter camp, with a proactive and engaging approach. He even recruited some new footballers to our football camp too!

He has received great feedback from schools and has demonstrated innovative practice despite limited equipment in lessons he’s been observed in this term.

He’s been a great addition to our team and he’s a worthy winner of Coach of the term for Term 5. Congratulations Aaron!

New Additions To The Team

Recently, two of our team have become first time fathers!

Congratulations to Ben and Tyrell on their new arrivals. We wish both families all the best as they embark on this incredible journey of parenthood!

Competition Review - Year 2 Athletics

Yesterday we welcomed 5 schools and over 200 children to Kennington Park for our Year 2 Athletics competition. After weather-watching intently all week, the rain held off and it was warm and sunny for the day’s event.

The children had the opportunity to compete in a range of events; long jump, javelin, speed bounce, sprint, hurdles, relay and a long-distance race.

Whilst the majority of the competition focused on participation, we selected 1 boy and girl from the long jump, javelin, sprint and long-distance events, to compete in a final for their school.

In addition we awarded the Year 2 Athletics trophy to the group of children who best demonstrated the Moving Matters values. Congratulations to Van Gogh on being awarded the trophy.

Thanks to Stockwell, Jubilee, Reay, Finton House and Van Gogh who attended and it would be great to see a few more schools competing next year.

Our Gifted & Talented Athletics competitions are almost fully booked so we are eagerly looking forward to those in the coming months.

Summer Term Curriculum - Athletics Sprints

In this video, you will see Coach Matt showcasing different techniques for sprinting, which is perfect practice for our Athletics competitions this summer and upcoming sports days in school.

Parents you could also give this a go next week during half term!

I’ve also put a lesson plan below that our coaches will be implementing over the next few weeks.

SFX Students Work Experience

This year has seen Moving Matters partner with St Francis Xavier sixth form college and provide a T-level opportunity to two of it’s students.

The students Kwasi and Akosua have worked with us part time to gain industry experience over a 4 month period, in particular supporting our admin and marketing functions.

Their time with Moving Matters has now come to an end and we wish them both all the best for the future.

Upcoming Mid-Summer Holiday Camps

Tuesday 28th May - Friday 31st May

Variety is the spice of life!

We focus on providing a range of activities at our multi-sports camp, so that children develop lots of different skills and can identify activities which they really engage with.

With our new laser tag equipment proving so popular, we have now bought even more equipment which can be used very day at camp.

Last week we released our Mid-Summer camp preview, which can be seen below:

Moving Matters Soccer School

With one half term left of the 2023/24 academic year, we’ve been looking back at the growth of our Soccer School in comparison to last year and we have seen an attendance increase of 59% which is incredible. We’ve also introduced our Weetabix Wildcats sessions, (re)introduced our Monday Night Football sessions and launched our first MMFC U8s team.

Weetabix Wildcats Success

Our Wildcats session continues to grow as coaches Sanatha and Tyrell have created a fun environment where girls can learn the game of football through play. We had a goal of 30 girls attending before the end of term and to date we have had 33 girls, with rave reviews. Week on week the players are growing in confidence and the familiarity brings out the best on the pitch.

We also received some complimentary tickets to watch England’s Lionesses vs Sweden and we were able to send 4 of our Wildcats to Wembley earlier in the year.

Wildcats is a new addition to our Soccer School programme and one of our parents Natasha had this to say:

Wildcats has been great for the girls, thanks so much for an amazing opportunity.

Moving Matters Football Club

On the 5th May our MMFC U8s team won their tournament via penalty shootout. Such a phenomenal accomplishment considering this is our first year with the team, and Coach Ellis Guardiola has worked wonders with the young players. We’ve had a lot of interest for a U9 team beginning in September, so hopefully we can continue the success!

We are aiming to start new teams for the 2024-25 season and so if interested in playing grassroots football with Moving Matters, register your interest below.
