Staff Training Day

We kicked off this week with our staff training day at Sunnyhill primary school. At the beginning of every full term, we hold whole staff training, as it’s so important to provide continual professional development to our workforce.

In line with our value: We Reflect, learn and improve Ash Snadden, who leads on Training and Development, assesses the needs of our coaches. The day was structured into 3 sessions.

  1. Teaching through games

Matt Hayman lead this and focused on the importance of teaching and learning within the context of the games aspect of PE. The session looked at application of conditions, learning of rules, drive by coaching, peer observations and teaching what you see.

  1. Dance

Often an area our staff feel less confident delivering, but such an important part of the PE national curriculum. Ash lead a great session on how to simplify the delivery of Dance, so that staff feel less overwhelmed delivering it. Check out our twitter feed for some entertaining dance sequences!

  1. Working with EYFS

Our mission as an organisation is To provide positive active experiences, which inspires a lifelong commitment to sport and physical activity and that journey starts in early years. We focused on the different personality traits and behaviours demonstrated at this early life stage and our staff drew pictures that depicted an EYFS child. We then explored the physical development outcomes, the topics they cover within the curriculum and the team then designed their own activities which they shared with whole group.

A really great day to kick off this Spring term.

How Rising Cost of Living is Impacting Sport & Physical Activity

In the UK, prices of consumer goods and services rose by 9.6% in the year to October 2022 – the fastest rate in four decades. Because of this, many families and companies had to make changes to their existing spending habits to adjust to their normal purchases being slightly more expensive.

In the sports industry, the cost of living crisis has affected the participation rate for physical activities in the following ways:

Access to Sports Facilities:

Rising costs may limit families’ ability to afford activities for sports clubs or for companies to hire facilities. This can reduce children’s access to well-maintained sports facilities.

Organised Sports Programmes:

Participation in organised sports programmes such as our school competitions, often involves registration fees, transportation costs, and other expenses. Higher costs can make it difficult to participate in these.

These are just two examples of the changes that have occured and Sport England have published a really interesting report on this:

New Faces

New year and we welcome new faces to the Moving Matters team. We feel like we’ve done some great business in the January transfer window bringing in the following coaches:

James Dillon-Weens – Who will be working at Archbishop Sumner

Aristide Basselle – Who will be working at Kingswood, Henry Cavendish and Soho Parish

Aaron Carrera – Who will be working at St Marys RC, Telferscot and Glenbrook

Look out for their staff profiles in future newsletters.

PE Equipment Audit

To deliver High-Quality PE you need to be able offer a broad range of opportunities to develop new skills.

This is impossible if you don’t have the correct equipment and unfortunately a lot of schools are experiencing this problem at the moment.

Therefore, below is a PE equipment audit for you to complete at your schools. It’s important to carry out an audit every term and ensure you have the right equipment especially if it’s your own curriculum map.

Developmental and Super Saturdays

Despite the cold last term, our Soccer School saw increased attendance every month in comparison to 2022/23, so a huge thank you to all parents and players who have supported over the last 4 months.

To strike whilst the iron is hot, it is the perfect time to add the Wildcats sessions to our Soccer School programme. This coupled with the early success of MMSS FC and our upcoming football competitions, we are looking forward to some great upcoming months!

If you have requested a MMSS branded jumper, details for these will be provided next week.
