DANGEROUS DINOSAURS - EARLY YEARS STORIES

This week we are learning some fundamental PE skills with a Dangerous Dinosaurs theme. Day by day, we will learn a range of fundamental skills and techniques and finish by putting your skills to the test with a skills/performance challenge at the end of the week. Read the introduction to our story below...

We have just arrived on Dino Island, the home of the world's most ferocious dinosaurs.  we are about to take a daring adventure in which our skills and will be tested to the limit. There are many dinosaurs we may meet on our journey, such as the terrible t-rex, the terrifying pterodactyls, the ravenous raptors and the spine-tingling spinosaurus.  it will be a long, tough journey. are you ready? are you sure? well then . . . let's get going.

AT THE END OF EACH ACTIVITY, RECORD YOUR BEST SCORE. WE'LL BE TRYING TO BEAT THESE SCORES IN FRIDAY'S SKILL CHALLENGE.

MONDAY

AIMING AND THROWING - CLICK HERE FOR A DEMONSTRATION VIDEO OF TODAY'S ACTIVITY

We have just landed on Dino Island and have encountered the Ravenous Raptors near our base camp! They're after our food! We need to get them away before we can continue our journey.

Activity

Set up a target, such as a wastepaper bin, a chair, a bucket etc. Using an object you can easily throw (a tennis ball, balled up socks/t-shirt, a table tennis ball etc), practise underarm and overarm throws, aiming to hit the object. Try to get as many objects ready to throw as possible and collect them once all have been thrown.

1 point = hit the target with ball/socks bouncing before hitting

2 points = hit the target without a bounce.

Things to think about:

How many points did you score? Can you throw underarm and overarm? Can you hit the target if you stand further away?

TUESDAY

BALL/OBJECT CONTROL SKILLS - CLICK HERE FOR A DEMONSTRATION VIDEO OF TODAY'S ACTIVITY

Phew! We finally got rid of the Raptors. Now it's time to set off into the jungle to collect the special Dino Fruit that only grows on the huge trees of Dino Island. They are rumoured to cure all illnesses, so we must find them! They are guarded by the Spine-Tingling Spinosaurus, so we're going to have to be very careful and very speedy.

Activity

Scatter lots of objects  (tennis balls, socks, an orange etc) that can roll/slide across the floor . Stand at one end of the area and sneak down towards the Dino Fruit, being careful to move quietly to not disturb the Spine-Tingling Spinosaurus, who is sleeping nearby. Once near the object, practise different ways of controlling the Dino Fruit as you move back to the start. Once all the Dino Fruit is collected, count how many you have. You have 45 seconds to collect as much Dino Fruit as possible.

Things to think about:

What are the different ways I used to control the Dino Fruit?  Can I get a beat my high score with my next try?   Can I dribble the Dino Fruit with my feet? Can I balance them on my body? Can I throw and catch them as I move?

WEDNESDAY

ROLLING/SLIDING SKILLS - CLICK HERE FOR A DEMONSTRATION VIDEO OF TODAY'S ACTIVITY

Wow, what a crazy day yesterday. Today, we are out near the coast, on the hunt for more of the wonders Dino Island has to offer. but Wait. . . what's that? The ground is shaking . . . it sounds like big, heavy footsteps. It's a Tyrannosaurus Rex and it's coming straight for us! We have to stop it. We're going to roll some big rocks under the T-Rex's feet to trip  it over so that we can make our escape

 Activity

This activity is best done with balls, ideally a tennis ball, a football, a basketball etc. However, you can also use balled up socks. Using finished plastic bottles, tins, or any container that can be knocked over safely (without breaking anything), practise rolling/sliding objects towards the objects, aiming to knock them over. For each object knocked over, count a point. Once all the objects are knocked down, the T-Rex has fallen and we can escape!

Things to think about:

Can I spread the objects out to make them harder to hit?   Can I roll/slide the balls/socks underarm accurately?  How can I make sure the ball goes where I want it to?

THURSDAY

SPEED AND COLLECTION SKILLS - CLICK HERE FOR A DEMONSTRATION VIDEO OF TODAY'S ACTIVITY

That was a near miss with the T-Rex. So glad we got away! We have come into the heart of the jungle and have found a Terrifying Pterodactyl's nest, filled with the stolen eggs of other dinosaurs! We must get them back to where they belong before the Terrifying Pterodactyl returns and WE MUST BE SPEEDY!

Activity

Create a large pile of objects (the dinosaur eggs) at one end of the area. Running as fast as you can, collect a dinosaur egg and run it back down to the start, and create another pile. You have 45 seconds to collect as many as you can before the Terrifying Pterodactyls return.

Things to think about:

Can I take the shortest route to the pile?   When I am running at speed, can I slow down with control?   Can I beat my high score next time?

FRIDAY
