Spring Half Term Review

As ever it’s been a busy half term at Moving Matters…

We have welcomed new Primary PE Specialist Antony Eyakware to our team, who is teaching PE and Sport over at Castle Hill Academy, Croydon. We’ve started a new contract with Winterbourne Academy and recruited for new contracts starting after February half term and Easter.

We’re delighted to welcome a new member school to our network after this half term, Immanuel and St Andrew, Streatham Vale, was a school I first started coaching at back in 2006, so very excited to be placing Josh Andrews and Hosanna Gayle at the school, to support their PE and School Sport provision.

Next term we are welcoming back one of our old Apprentices, Rianna, who’ll be taking over at member schools; Paxton, Fenstanton, St Mary’s RC and St Helens.

This term’s competitions have been a great success, with a huge number of schools attending Dodgeball and yesterday’s Swimming Gala. It really is lovely to see so many children competing for their schools and enjoying everything that that experience brings.

Looking ahead to next week, we look forward to welcoming children back to The Elmgreen for a fun and active week at camp.

Many thanks as ever to the amazing Moving Matters team, who’ve had to tolerate some cold conditions in Term 3! We look forward to the increase in temperature as we enter Spring 2.

Have a good half term all.

Julian’s Case Study

We’ve worked with Julian’s Primary for almost a decade and have curated this great case study further exploring what we’ve been delivering.

Staff Training Day

On Monday we had our termly staff meeting at our base, Sunnyhill Primary School. This is a great time to get the team together, provide updates and develop teaching practice.

The main focus of this training session was Assessment for Learning and was led by Operations Manager, Ashley Snadden.

This is an area we have focused on during Quality Assurance visits this half term.

The final part of our team training was led by Senior Leadership Team members Levi and George, showing & discussing how to build a scheme of work in Gymnastics. Very engaging session, expertly delivered.

It was great to see the team in full and the convening over the great work they are doing in the Lambeth, Westminster, Southwark and Croydon boroughs.

Primary PE Specialist of the Term

Michael Embaye

Congratulations to Michael on winning this term’s Primary PE Specialist award.

Michael has had an excellent term working across Jubilee, St Marys RC and Saint Joseph’s Borough.

He has:

  • Received fantastic feedback from Saint Josephs

  • Had great impact at Jubilee on the Professional Development programme supporting their teachers

  • Posted some great tweets on the work he’s been doing, raising the profile of PE

  • Had 100% attendance record

Super Bowl LVII

The Tale of Two Underdogs

In the Moving Matters office, the NFL is one of the most followed leagues in sport and their biggest game is being played on Sunday – Super Bowl LVII.

The Philadelphia Eagles had the 12th best odds to win the Super Bowl and the Kansas City Chiefs had just lost Tyreek Hill, voted the 15th best player in the entire league last season and media were wondering if they would even be a decent team moving forward.

These two teams meeting in the Super Bowl demonstrates a real story of overcoming odds as despite their issues, both of their Quarterbacks were injured during their playoff runs (Jalen Hurts’ strained pectoral/shoulder injury and Patrick Mahomes’ high ankle sprain).

This Sunday looks to be a great spectacle between the two best teams in each conference and a Halftime Show performance from Rihanna.

Moving Matters PE Curriculum

Year 6 -American Football- Throwing (Quarterback)

Flag football is a diverse sport and is great for including all different skill levels. With the Super Bowl coming up on Sunday, we felt it best to include our curriculum piece around one of our more underrepresented activities.

The button below links to a pdf lesson plan file from our PE curriculum service, detailing the activity that is Quarterback throwing.

We’re hoping to add Flag Football to our competitions programme next year, so it is definitely worth checking out:

Year 4 & 5 Swimming Gala @ Streatham Leisure Centre Thursday February 9th

On Thursday we hosted our Year 4 & 5 Swimming Gala at Streatham Leisure Centre.

“The first gala was made up of 5 schools: our newest member school Immanuel St Andrew’s, the ever-present Julian’s, two teams from MM swimming gala legends Henry Cavendish and Holy Ghost, who are the reigning champions of our last 2 galas. This gala was always going to be hotly contested.

The gala started with some really fast lengths from Holy Ghost, Henry Cavendish and Julian’s in particular and as the medals were handed out at the end of the races, it was difficult to say conclusively who was in the lead. As the competition went on, Immanuel started to show signs of life with some fast swims, always recognisable by their impressive gold swimming hats. The gala finished with some highly competitive relays that brought some of the loudest cheers we have heard at a competition in a long time.

The second gala was made up of 4 schools: 2 of our long-time member schools from the Gipsy Hill Federation in Kingswood and Crawford, the competitive and ambitious Telferscot and finally Van Gogh, who have become very familiar faces at Moving Matters competitions. This smaller gala had a slightly more laid back feel as Telferscot largely dominated, with their wins interspersed by a few remarkable swims from the Crawford team. All teams made themselves proud.”

Also Many thanks to Caroline from Leander Swimming Club for coming to the swimming gala, to assist & do some talent spotting. Some fantastic swimmers who’ll hopefully get further opportunities through her club.

What’s On Offer 2022-23…

It’s been an exciting start to the academic year, with new staff and new schools. We’ve also been successful in procuring new contracts with existing and new schools.

If anything we offer appeals, do get in touch, we’d love to increase the number of member schools we work with.

Bringing our mission statement to as many young children as possible has always been our ethos, and this year we will pursue this even further.

“We provide children with positive, active, learning experiences”

School Sports Clubs

We offer pre, lunch and after-school sports clubs as the benefits of extra-curricular activities for children (especially students) is a long list. Boosting social development by building character and confidence, providing an extra hour of active movement in the day, and helping them understand themselves better by developing key skills through sport are just a few to name.

SLD Rebranding

After many years in our signature green and white colours, we are a little sad and simultaneously excited to announce that SLD Soccer School will be changing its name to Moving Matters Soccer School!

This is in order to bring this strand of the business into better alignment with the other work we do and to make our soccer school more recognisable as a part of Moving Matters.

This will involve a change to a red, black and white colour logo and this change will be noticeable across our website, social media accounts and all other promotional material.

This change will be undergone during the February Half Term break and we will be communicating with all parents to ensure they are aware.

February Holiday Camp

Next week we will be hosting our first Holiday Camp of the year at Elmgreen School. We currently have on average over 40 children attending each day, and we are hoping to increase this number come Monday.

We have decided to go with a new, fresher flyer feel for this year as it was time for a change, but the information remains the same. One week of awesome activities for all who attend.
