The Importance of School Sports Days

During the summer term, Moving Matters are constantly facilitating and supporting sports days and our own school competitions. School sports days are one of the most eagerly-anticipated days in a young child’s academic calendar and is always a great opportunity to encourage all pupils to be enthusiastic about Athletics.

The importance of PE, sport and physical activity in primary school cannot be underestimated and getting kids involved in at a young age can make them healthier and happier.

The three main aspects that sports days introduce children to is:

  • A sense of belonging

  • The importance of exercise and physical activity

  • Building Resilience

I found a really insightful blog post on LinkedIn expanding on some of these points which you can read below:

Competition Review -

Year 3 & 4 Gifted & Talented Athletics

Our term 6 competitions kicked off on Monday at Tooting Bec Athletics track with our Year 3 and 4 Gifted and Talented Athletics event.

It was a little damp when we arrived following the overnight rain but we were not deterred and thankfully despite a couple of showers the weather didn’t affect the day.

Our event was superbly supported by the students from Platanos college, who assisted the Moving Matters staff facilitating 9 Athletic events:

  1. Shot Put

  2. Javelin

  3. Long Jump

  4. Speed Bounce

  5. 60 Metres

  6. 150 Metres

  7. 300 Metres

  8. 600 Metre marathon

  9. 4 x 100 relay

This event was possibly the smoothest Athletics meet we have ever run, following weeks of planning and co-ordination from the team.

A total of 13 teams and 12 schools competed on the day, with points awarded to the top 8 participants per event.

The talent on display was phenomenal and there were some thrilling track races.

The margin of victory was once again small with the same two schools from last year battling it out for first and second.

Congratulations to the victors, Granton primary school who continue their illustrious success at our Athletics events.

Results below:

  1. Granton

  2. Julians

  3. Finton House B and Kingswood

  4. Finton House A

  5. Woodmansterne

  6. Immanuel and St Andrew

  7. Van Gogh

  8. Dunraven

  9. Clapham Manor

  10. Wyvil and Sunnyhill

  11. Jubilee

Many thanks to all who attended, it was a brilliant day.

Upcoming Competition -

Summer Term Curriculum -

Long Distance Running

Long-distance running is a huge part of our Athletics competitions, sports days and this summer’s Olympic games. In the build up to these, trying to get young children to practice endurance running might seem challenging, but the visual aid and lesson plan below should help:

Moving Matters Soccer School

Throughout the year we have collected lots of data regarding our Soccer School, especially because of the new additions of our Wildcats, MMFC and Monday Night Football programme.

As of last week, we’ve highlighted a few key statistics we’ve found, which we will be expanding on in our Soccer School newsletter at the end of this month:

  • On average, there are 91 players who attend our Soccer School sessions every week

  • Our Football Camp has seen a 31% increase in attendance since the 2022/23 academic year.

  • We have had 219 different players attend our sessions throughout the year, and there has been an increase in the amount of girls in comparison to last year.

We have 5 weeks left of sessions until the end of the 23/24 academic year, so let’s hope for a big push in attendance to break even more of our records.

Moving Matters Football Club

It’s been a great first season for Moving Matters FC with the team doing brilliantly under the expert direction of Ellis. We now have sign ups for another U9 team next season and so we’re looking forward to building on this year’s successes.

We’re still looking to expand and for volunteer parents to support us with that, so if you are interested in your child playing grassroots football with Moving Matters, register your interest below:
