Keeping Kids Active During Summer

As we wrap up a record-breaking academic year, we have been reflecting on the importance of maintaining physical activity levels throughout the summer holiday.

According to a 2022 study by Sport England, only 45% of children engage in the recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity during the summer break, compared to over 50% during the school term. This decline is attributed to the absence of structured school-based physical education and extracurricular sports activities.

We have a comprehensive Summer holiday camp programme that is designed to tackle this with our flagship Elmgreen camp, constantly-growing Immanuel & St Andrew multisports camp, and our Holiday Activity and Food camps that have been run in Lambeth, Croydon, Southwark and Wandsworth.

We have also recently published a blog post highlighting the Top 10 Benefits of Keeping Kids Active During Summer!

England Onto The Next Stage

On Tuesday evening, England dragged themselves to a 0-0 draw against Slovenia, which saw them top Group C and head into the Round of 16, where they will face Slovakia.

By all metrics England have been underwhelming in these Euros, with Gareth Southgate’s job coming under fire. England's coach also called for patience as they hope to step up their performances, saying the team needed to take it "one step at a time".

Our midfield engine of Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham have not played as well as expected considering they have just come off the back of incredible individual seasons. And on the other side, Cole Palmer looked great in a 20-minute cameo off the bench.

Let’s hope the boys kick on in the next round and bring the trophy home.

Impact Reports

Not only are we focused on creating impact at our member schools, we also want to celebrate it. Our Impact Reports highlight key statistics, illustrating the breadth and depth of our contribution to the schools we partner with.

Included in the reports are staff testimonials from schools, reflecting the positive changes observed in their students and staff.

We have also incorporated results from our service evaluation survey, providing valuable insights into the effectiveness of our programme. These reports underscore our commitment to making a lasting difference within physical education, and we are excited to continue building on this foundation in the 2025.

Here are some of our favourite Impact Reports from this past year:

Holiday Activity and Food Programme - Croydon

The Holiday Activity and Food Programme has been operating since 2018. It is a government-funded initiative that provides children who are Free School Meals (FSM) eligible, the opportunity to participate in physical activity throughout the school holidays.

At Moving Matters, we will be assigning 40 places a day at our Summer Camp for attendees to take part in a high-quality multi-sports camp ran by experienced, qualified, DBS-checked Coaches.

The aims of this programme are for participants to:

  • eat healthily over the school holidays

  • be active during the school holidays

  • take part in engaging and enriching activities which support the development of resilience, character and wellbeing along with their wider educational attainment

  • be safe and not to be socially isolated

  • have a greater knowledge of health and nutrition

  • be more engaged with school and other local services

Children who attend will receive:

  • a free meal

  • free sports provision

  • nutrition workshops

We ran an incredible HAF camp during the Easter holidays and are hoping to replicate this success again over the summer.

Croydon voucher codes were released on Tuesday so just search ‘MOVING MATTERS’ on Holiday Activities to find us.

Moving Matters Soccer School

We’ve steadily averaged 92 attendees per week so look well on track to beat this number and reach 3000 hopefully.
